RFB 프로토콜은 GUI 시스템(Windows, X-window, Mac)을 원격에서 액세스하고자 하는 목적에서 만들어진, 간단한 프로토콜이다. framebuffer 레벨에서 구현되므로 RFB(Remote FrameBuffer)라는 이름이 붙었다.
VNC(http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html)가 이 프로토콜에 기반하여 만들어졌다.

RFB는 thin Client 프로토콜이다. 클라이언트는 디스플레이/키보드/포인터(마우스같은)의 사용자 정보를 서버로 보내며, 서버는 Framebuffer의 정보(GUI 시스템, 애플리케이션)를 클라이언트로 전송한다.
